Mathematics problems, games, and articles

This month's problems, articles and games are available in the left hand menu, but why not install a flash player in your browser so you can use this site navigator?

Welcome to the October edition of NRICH, the maths enrichment site.

This site supports teachers and learners of mathematics with thousands of free resources which are designed to develop subject knowledge and problem-solving skills.

This month the problem solving and mathematical thinking theme is Representing.

Biscuit Decorations provides opportunities to talk about different ways of recording mathematics as you work on a problem and Quadrilaterals encourages use of symbolic representations of findings. Crossed Ends introduces and develops algebraic notation, and Pythagoras for a Tetrahedron offers an attractive generalisation of Pythagoras Theorem to 3D.

In addition, Bernard Bagnall discusses the importance of valuing young children's mathematical representations in this article for teachers.

The new site

We thought it was time for a change, so we'll shortly be saying goodbye to the jungle and ice imagery that has adorned the NRICH site for the last few years. Just so you know what to expect, the new design will look something like the thumbnail image below. We've gone for a less noisy design that has plenty of white space to set off the all-important content. Hope you like it!
